The ABCs of Christmas….. O is for ORANGES

I’ve been talking about things that remind me of Christmas and today I want to talk about oranges! The smell of oranges studded with cloves and dried out orange slices hanging on the tree really remind me of this time of year and make me feel nostalgic.

If you fancy a go at making some sliced orange decorations to hang from your tree or some studded oranges then follow the instructions below:

Dried Orange SlicesĀ

To make your own dried orange slices you will need the following:

  • Oranges
  • An oven
  • A wire rack
  • A knife
and you need to do the following:
  • Slice the oranges in 1cm slices
  • Place on the rack and put into the oven at about 120C (250F)
  • Leave for 2-3 hours and turn several times during this time to prevent them from sticking
  • Take out of the oven and allow to cool
  • Once cool attach a ribbon to the orange slice and hang!
Clove Studded Oranges
To make your own clove studded oranges you will need the following:
  • Oranges
  • Cloves
  • Masking tape
  • Ribbon
  • Cocktail stick or something similar
and you need to do the following:
  • Firstly mark where you want to place your ribbon with the masking tape (most people do a criss-cross with the ribbon)
  • Now use the cocktail stick to make holes where you want the cloves to go, you can either fill in the whole orange or mark out a pattern
  • Place the cloves into the holes that you have made leaving the crowns of the cloves outside the orange flesh
  • Once you are satisfied that you have put the cloves where you want them to go, remove the masking tape and replace it with the ribbon
  • Hang your orange up or place it in a bowl with other oranges
Please note these activities are best carried out by adults as elements of each activity are dangerous if carried out by little hands! Why not make this a sensory activity for your little one instead and let them enjoy smelling the oranges once you have made them.
