The ABCs of Christmas….. B is for BAKING and BOOKBUGS!

I hope you were inspired by yesterday’s post about advent calendars…. today we are focusing on the letter “B”.

Another activity that I love to do at Christmas time is a bit of Christmas baking and the one thing that really makes me think of Christmas is gingerbread men so here’s a recipe (taken from the BBC recipe collection) for you and your little one to try and bake some gingerbread men, and other shapes, together.

  • 350g/ 12oz plain flour
  • 1tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 2tsp ground ginger
  • 1tsp ground cinnamon
  • 125g/ 4.5oz butter
  • 175g/ 6oz soft brown sugar
  • 1 free range egg
  • 4tbsp golden syrup
To decorate
  • writing icing
  • cake decorations

  • Sift the flour, bicarbonate of soda, ginger and cinnamon together into the bowl of a food processor
  • Add the butter and blend until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs
  • Stir in the sugar
  • Lightly beat the egg and the golden syrup together
  • Add the egg mix to the food processor and pulse into the mixture until it comes together
  • Take the dough out of the bowl, knead until smooth and then wrap in cling film and put into the fridge for 15 minutes
  • Preheat the oven to 180C/ 350F/ Gas 4
  • Line 2 x baking trays with greaseproof paper
  • Take the dough out of the fridge and roll it out to a thickness of 0.5cm onto a lightly floured surface
  • Using your cutters, cut out the gingerbread men shapes and place on the baking tray. Make sure you leave gaps between the shapes
  • Bake for 12-15 minutes or until lightly golden brown
  • Take out of the oven and leave to cool down for 10 minutes and then move to a wire rack to finish cooling
  • When cooled decorate with the writing icing and the cake decorations

Mmmm, yummy! I’m drooling at the thought of them!

“B” is also for Bookbugs and for their Christmas Show.
