Love is in the air……

Hi all, just a quick share with you today of a lovely Valentine’s Day activity my mindees and I did together. Firstly we spoke about who is in our hearts and who is special in our lives and then the children chose who they would like to make a Valentine’s Day card for. Here is a picture of one of the cards made today:

First of all we made our lovely little laced heart with our sparkly red wool and then we did a bit of letter recognition to stamp out our message on the card as the little one in question cannot write yet…… what a great card for them to give to their someone special.

If you want to make your own laced card heart to put on the front of your own Valentine’s Day card you simply cut your shape out of card, punch holes around the edge and then thread wool through the holes to form a pattern. I put sticky tape on the end of the wool so that it was stiffer and easier for the children to push through the holes and we finished up by using more sticky tape to stick the loose ends on the back of the heart before gluing it to a piece of folded card.

Fun Day Monday

As it’s Valentine’s Day this Friday we have been feeling the love here in my childminding service. Last week we made our mums and dads (and grans!) a very sweet little candle holder.

If you want to make one too this is what you will need:

  • A shallow glass jar (we used some from a well known chocolate dessert company that I had saved but a jam jar is just as good)
  • PVA glue
  • A paintbrush
  • Tissue paper (we used pink, purple and red) cut up into small pieces
  • An apron

and this is what you need to do:

  • Put the apron on your little one
  • Show your little one how to stick a piece of tissue paper onto the glass jar
  • Let them go for it and cover their jar using all the different colours
  • When they tell you that it’s finished give the tissue paper another coat of PVA glue and allow to dry
  • Pop a tealight candle into the holder and enjoy the warmth of the glow (remember never to leave a candle unattended and always keep it out of reach of your little one)

Fun Day Monday

Hi there, how has your week been? We’ve had lots of fun celebrating Chinese New Year here in my childminding service – did you have a go at making or doing anything?

This week it’s going to be Pancake Day on Tuesday and Valentine’s Day on Thursday so there’s lots of fun to be had!

I spotted this pancake idea on which I think the children will love and we’ll have great fun making together:

To celebrate Valentine’s Day and to spread some love we shall be making heart -shaped stampers out of toilet roll tubes.

If you fancy a go you will need:

  • Toilet roll tube
  • Red paint (or any other colour that you might want to use!)
  • A shallow tray
  • Paper to print onto
  • An apron for your little one
and this is what you need to do:
  • Take your toilet roll tube and squash the middle part inwards to make a heart shape
  • Put the paint into the shallow dish
  • Put the apron on your little one
  • Give your little one the tube and show them how to dip it into the paint and print it onto the paper
  • Let your little one go for it!
Another idea that we’ve shared before but I think we’ll be doing again is a sun catcher except instead of making one in an egg shape like we did last Easter we shall be making them in the shape of a heart.
For instructions for this activity visit my previous blog entry here and simply change the shape from an egg to a heart.
Finally, I have some heart shaped cookie cutters that I think we’ll be putting to good use with the playdough or even to shape our sandwiches at lunchtime…… I can’t wait!
Have a fun week full of love!
